Return to Biker Lane
Kontra's Menagerie: Book Twenty-One
On the Road: A series of unexpected meetings bring a solitary hippo shifter to a new family and friends...if he's willing to take a chance.
Jethro Gunther has been servicing the motorcycles of his old pal's gang for over a decade. When his buddy brings him a new customer, Wilhelm Smith, Jethro finds himself tempted to give in to his attraction for men for only the second time in his life. The first guy had left Jethro used and rejected, so he'd turned to one night stands with biker bunnies. It was just easier. Wilhelm, however, seems different. He's straightforward in his attraction and direct in his desires--he also refuses to be a dirty little secret. One afternoon, Jethro realizes just how different Wilhelm actually is. Shifters are real and Wilhelm is one. Can Jethro accept his new reality and figure out a way to openly incorporate a male partner into his life, or will he miss out on the best thing that could ever happen to him?

Wilhelm realized Jethro had stopped talking. Too bad, too, because his body responded to his mate’s speech the same way his hippo felt when wallowing in shallow water—he became totally relaxed. Blinking slowly, he returned his focus to where it should be—buying a motorcycle.
Offering Jethro a warm, lazy smile, Wilhelm admitted, “I didn’t understand half that. Sorry.” He pointed his thumb at Kontra. “It’s why I brought him and his friends. They know bikes. I just want one to ride with them.” Partly lowering his eyelids, he openly swept his gaze over Jethro. “Or with you.”
Jethro’s lips parted a little as his brows shot up, almost to be hidden by the red bandana he wore around his head.
Wilhelm had a sudden urge to grab the bit of red cloth and tug it from him. Would the blond hair peeking out over the top of it tumble around Jethro’s shoulders? Was it long enough to slide his fingers through and hang on? Could he—
“Uh, well, I do ride regularly. To and from work most days.” Jethro’s brows furrowed and he scratched at the light scruff on his jaw. “Tuesdays are my day off, so—” He blinked, then shook his head. “Do you even have a motorcycle license?”
Damn, too bad it’s Wednesday. Gonna have to wait a whole week before getting a chance to spend the day with my mate.
Liking that Jethro seemed out of sorts, telling Wilhelm that his mate was not unaffected by his presence, he smiled and nodded. “Yep.” His license was as fake as the rest of his identity. “The guys taught me.”
Wilhelm glanced around at the group of shifters who’d accompanied him to the shop. Noting that they were all watching with abject interest, Wilhelm grinned widely and refocused on Jethro. He knew he wasn’t the only one that had noticed the scent of his mate’s arousal when he’d walked up to them.
Jethro’s unique scent is unique, pungent, like the finest wine.
“So, you gonna show me the sights then?” Wilhelm asked, returning his focus to Jethro. He gave him a heated smile. “Or maybe just the view of your bedroom?”
Jethro’s jaw sagged open, and his eyes widened. His shock was nearly a palpable thing. He even took a step backward.
“B-Bedroom?” Jethro’s tone sounded decidedly tight. “W-Why would I show you m-my b-bedroom?”
Yuma reached out and patted Wilhelm on the upper arm. “Better slow your roll there, big guy.” His brown eyes twinkled with amusement. “Maybe start with asking him to dinner first.”
“You are attracted to me. I can tell,” Wilhelm mused bluntly, cocking his head. Thinking of what Yuma had said, he told Jethro, “I admit it’s been a long time since I’ve done more than a trick in a club. Was I too straightforward? Would you prefer dinner before sex?”
Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to be much better. Jethro gasped and coughed like he’d swallowed something that had gone down the wrong way. He took another step back, taking his tall skinny body that Wilhelm wanted to explore in the worst way farther away from him.
That wasn’t what Wilhelm wanted at all. He’d obviously done something wrong. Wilhelm just wasn’t certain what.
